A Digital Story Featuring Fairfield's Moss Street Market

More than just a place to get your groceries, the Moss Street Market in the heart of Fairfield is a gathering place for those that celebrate the ideals of community, sustainability and local products. From fresh produce to Persian fare to hand crafted toys, the Moss Street Market is sure to have what you are looking for and then some. This video aims to depict the variety of perspectives regarding the market. For some it provides a means to live, for others it is simply a way to spend a Saturday, but for all it is a place that offers opportunities for cultural development and environmental initiaties.

In GEOG 219 students' final projects consider multi-perspectives on social and environmental sustainibility initiatives in the CRD.
These videos are the result of the students' careful reflection and creativity. They are meant to enlighten, inform and inspire reflection on and care for the special places that we call home.

"For me, the Moss Street Market enabled me to see the possibilities of a community based, market experience. It allowed for a deeper relationship between the consumer and the vendors, and made shopping an experience rather than a chore. The people, the products, and the atmosphere of the market itself guarantees my attendance at future markets for years to come." -Sam Van Noort

"I had never been to the Moss St. Market before, in fact I had never even heard about it, but doing this project really opened my eyes, to this market and to markets in general. Going to the market let me see just how important it is to the community, it is always busy, even in the fall. The first time I went to this market was one of the rainiest days they have ever seen at the market, yet people still came out, it was wonderful to see people so strongly supporting their community, even in poor weather!" -Erica Kenworthy

"I have always know about the Moss St. Market, but I never regularly went. What drew me to Moss St. was a need to learn about my own community and a desire to show the rest of Victoria and the surrounding area a unique and intricate part of the landscape. My group and I were keen to re-discover what the market had to offer. By creating this video we were able to not only show others the importance of such a place, but also realize that everyone had their own versions of sustainability and community. My hope is that Moss St. Market will inspire other communities to create their own markets." -Dylan Hillis
