Green Spots Program

Studies show that children now spend less time in nature than any previous generation, which could be contributing to significant health issues. On the other hand, research shows that spending time in nature is linked to a myriad of physical, mental, and social health benefits for kids. In response this, Habitat Acquisition Trust (HAT) developed the Green Spots Program to help get kids outside by working with schools to establish native plant gardens. The goal is to connect youth with nature and to link schools and neighbourhoods to nearby natural areas.

The project provides free, fun activities and outdoor nature classrooms for grades k-7. The gardens are meant to be an ongoing outdoor classroom where children learn about local flora, fauna, soil processes, ecosystems, and other subjects such as art, music, writing, and math on school property.

The point on this map indicates the location of SJ Willis Alternative School, who participated in the Green Spots Program. The video below provides a great overview of their experience!
